MIKE SEXTON EXECUTIVE HOST AND SPOKESPERSON FOR PARTYPOKER.COM
MILLION III
Mike Sexton is probably best known as a leading ambassador for
poker. He is regarded as one of the most authoritative figures
in the game and one of its consummate promoters. To those who
watch him as commentator on The World Poker Tour, he is the elder
statesman - distinguished, professorial, yet colorful and exuberant.
Sexton arrived at his stature as poker sage and advocate through
a long and successful career as a professional poker player. He
is a former European poker champion and World Series of Poker
winner.
However, his career took several turns before reaching the pinnacle
of poker. Always a competitor from his youth, Sexton started out
as a young Dayton, Ohio gymnast accomplished enough to win the
state championship and secure a full four-year scholarship to
Ohio State University, where he received a degree in Public Recreation.
In college dorms, he learned to play poker and developed his life-long
zeal for card games.
After graduating, Sexton went into the military as a US Army
paratrooper, stationed in Ft. Bragg, NC, where he played poker
with his fellow soldiers when not jumping out of planes. After
completing his military service, Sexton decided to stay in NC,
taking a job as a salesman, while also teaching ballroom dancing
and bridge classes. He also started playing poker in his spare
hours. Realizing that he could make a living playing poker, Sexton
left his day job to become a full-time, professional poker player.
He frequently drove four hours a day around the state to participate
in lucrative home games that helped pay the bills.
A born coach and teacher, Sexton kept his hand in sports during
this time, coaching Little League baseball. Despite his ambitions
to reach the apex of poker, his love of coaching Little League
kept him from competing in the World Series of Poker for many
years, due to date conflicts. Ultimately, his passion for poker
won out and Sexton became a regular fixture at the annual tournament.
He now lives in Las Vegas.
Sexton parlayed his poker success into a multi-faceted career
that includes authoring a monthly column for CardPlayer magazine,
hosting the World Poker Tour broadcasts, teaching poker at seminars
and tournament promotion. In partnership PartyPoker.com and Linda
Johnson, he launched The PartyPoker.com Million, now in its third
generation, and he stays actively involved in its promotion as
executive host and spokesman.
