Poker history was made the week
of March 10-17, 2002 at the first PartyPoker.com Million tournament
when Kathy Liebert won the guaranteed first prize of $1,000,000.
She was the first woman in poker history to win $1,000,000,
and the event itself was historic in guaranteeing a first
prize of $1,000,000 in a Hold-em tournament, combining online
qualifications with offline buy ins, and hosting the Finals
aboard a week long cruise.
One hundred players qualified online (for only $22) to
the Finals aboard the ship (which included accommodations
for two) while 39 bought their way in for $8,000 a pop.
In terms of poker drama, it doesn't get any better than
this: the final came down to superstar and former World
Champion, Phil Hellmuth, poker veteran Kathy Liebert and
online qualifier, Berj Kacherian (a database administrator
from Los Angeles, California) playing for a cool $1,000,000.
The most likely favorite, Phil, finished third. The lead
seesawed back and forth nine times before Liebert finally
won. Poker history was made! To see for yourself, the whole
event was filmed and will be aired on the Travel Channel
eight times, beginning Oct 20th, 2002.
